Alex Lee

Alex is an Associate Professor of Philosophy and the Director of Liberal Studies Programs at Alaska Pacific University, where he also serves as founding co-director for APU’s Environmental Studies degree program. His research and teaching focus on ethics and environmental change from an interdisciplinary perspective. Alex also serves as Captain of the Science Alliance at Protect Our Winters, where he coordinates a nationwide team of 40 climate scientists to provide expertise on programs, campaigns, education, and policy. Alex holds both a Ph.D. and a M.S. from the University of Colorado, Boulder and a A.B. from Dartmouth College.

 Alex has received several grants from organizations including The Mellon Foundation and The National Science Foundation; he is a regular on the conference circuit, giving talks at both Harvard and Princeton this past year; he is also currently involved with fieldwork in the Arctic, and collaborations with teams in Alaska, Oregon, California, Colorado, Columbia, and the UK. He has won multiple institutional awards for his research and service at APU. Alex publishes frequently, in both peer-reviewed academic journals, as well as outdoor and media outlets (these include Powder Magazine, Ski Journal, WildSnow, Grist, High Country News, and several newspapers around the U.S). He is a founding writer at the High Route, an online ski media outlet with a focus on human-powered adventure, and he co-hosts the climate ethics podcast, ‘A Hostile Climate.’ Alex combines work in environmental studies with more than 15 years of experience working in a variety of capacities across the outdoor industry (in addition to writing, advising, and current work with POW, Alex used to be a backcountry guide and naturalist, has served on non-profit boards for organizations in environmental and avalanche education, served as a gear tester, and co-founded a skimo race in Leadville, Colorado). He spends his time in the outdoors as an avid backcountry skier, climber, trail runner, fisherman, packrafter, and freediver.
